Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case by Stuart Taylor, Jr. and K. C. Johnson, St. Martin's Griffin, 2008.
Prosecutorial Misconduct
This is a detailed look at one case of prosecutorial misconduct. In order to win votes from black citizens in North Caroline, a district attorney engaged in malicious prosecution of three members of the Duke LaCrosse team. The district attorney accused the athletes of raping a black woman that the team had hired as a stripper. But the physical evidence and eye-witness testimony did not support the woman’s assertion that she had been raped.
Optics
This imaginary crime against a black woman was a poorly chosen symbol of white racism. It was treated by many of the Duke University faculty and most of the news media as a symbol of white racism, even though the facts did not support that view. Sticking up for the Duke players made one look like a racist, which few people had the guts to endure. The parents of the falsely accused students stood by them, and eventually the truth won out.
